Earlier this week, 32 UCL School of Management students from a range of programmes returned to London following an incredible trip to the United Arab Emirates in recognition of Global Engagement Week. Organised by our Global Engagement team, the visit saw students develop a deeper understanding of the business landscape in the UAE to enhance their understanding of the benefits and challenges of working and operating within the country.
Kicking off the week, students enjoyed a desert safari and an informative session on the differences between the business ecosystems in the UK and the UAE. They also explored both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, including a guided tour of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Deepening their understanding of the UAE business landscape, students visited a number of organisations within the country, including a trip to VML to gain an understanding of the ways in which marketing campaigns and strategies are adapted to meet the needs of Middle Eastern markets, and PwC Middle East to explore the challenges and opportunities facing the consulting sector within this region. Finally, students explored the Siemens Energy Middle East offices to learn more about energy transition within the country.
Honouring the country’s dedication to sustainability initiatives, our School of Management students also visited the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerator hosted by Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. On the day, students explored climate policy, innovation and the need for both individual and institutional leadership in advancing sustainability.
The group also explored the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in the development of climate solutions, as well as the ethical and societal questions that appear alongside them. Concluding their week, students then enjoyed a farewell lunch at the iconic Palm Jumeriah in Dubai.
Discussing the impact of Global Engagement Week on students, Senior Global Engagement Officer Victoria Karaxha stated, ‘this programme in the UAE provided our UG and PG students with the opportunity to develop new insights into global business practices, fostered their cross-cultural understanding, and sparked inspiration for innovative thinking in an interconnected world’.
