On Friday 05 September 2025, the UCL School of Management hosted the second annual Accounting Streams Workshop on Level 50 of One Canada Square. The event brought together over 50 members of the Accounting Streams community, along with academic professionals, to engage in meaningful discussions about the future of accounting education and the continued development of the Accounting Streams initiative.
The workshop is part of the broader Accounting Streams project, which aims to redefine the ways in which accounting is taught. Through its interactive digital texts, the initiative goes beyond technical training to explore the social and ethical dimensions of the field.
The workshop opened with a welcome from a UCL School of Management Professor and Deputy Director for Student Experience, who introduced the Accounting Streams community and its core objectives. Project Co-Leaders Professor Richard Murphy (University of Sheffield) and Jenni Rose (University of Manchester) then led thought-provoking sessions: Richard addressed sustainability in the accounting sector, while Jenni facilitated an interactive activity focused on envisioning the future of accounting education.
A standout moment of the workshop was a dynamic panel discussion featuring prominent voices in the field: John Munnelly from Chartered Accountants Ireland and Kaija Laurila of Capitals Coalition. Additionally, Project Manager Rhiannon Soper delivered an engaging presentation on the Financial Reporting Council’s evolving role in shaping accounting education.
The workshop also showcased new educational resources and initiatives. Advisory group members Professor Jim Haslam and Dr Mengyuan Feng introduced their upcoming mini text, Grand Challenges: Accounting as a Solution. Contributions were also shared by Professor Nadia Gulko, Sam Bell, Dr Michael Guo, and Dr Kirsten Kininmonth, who presented their resources designed to complement the Principles of Accounting textbook.
Discussing the workshop, Professor Susan Smith said: “The Accounting Streams project showcases the generosity and creativity of the accounting community. Together we are driving change in accounting education.”
