Decision making processes in healthcare teams

Teams of multi-disciplinary experts (MDTs) are used for making patient treatment decisions in cancer care. This research takes a qualitative approach to examine the processes through which those decisions are made, paying particular attention to the way that the status hierarchy in the team influences group discussions and decision making.

Multi-disciplinary teams make critical decisions about patient care and have been identified as a best practice for healthcare decision making. However, relatively little is known about the process of effective or ineffective functioning in those teams. The aim of this research is to identify opportunities to improve decision making processes in MDTs.
